Free Pattern: Thick and Thin Striped Beanie Newborn Earflap Modification


For a sweet friend, a sweet little newborn hat.  I just put the earflaps from the Earflap Hat Newborn onto the Thick and Thin Striped Beanie Newborn, and edged it a little differently.  So not really a new pattern, but some might appreciate the step-by-step.


Supplies:
Two colors of worsted weight cotton yarn (I used "I Love This Cotton" by Hobby Lobby)
Size 5mm (H/8) hook

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sc - single crochet
Sl st - Slip Stitch

Sc dec – single crochet decrease

Special instructions:
Sc dec – Pull up a loop in each stitch indicated, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.


Instructions:
(ch-3 or ch-1 do not count as dc or sc in stitch count)
Round 1: With color 1, Magic Ring, ch 3.  Inside ring, 10 dc.  Tighten ring, join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Change to color 2.  Ch 1. 2 sc in each dc around. (20 sc)  Join to ch.
Round 3: Change to color 1.  Ch 3.  *2 dc in next sc.  Dc in next sc.  Repeat from * around. (30 dc)  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 4: Change to color 2.  Ch 1.  Sc around.  (30 sc)  Join to ch.
Round 5: Change to color 1.  Ch 3.  *2 dc in next sc.  Dc in next 2 sc.  Repeat from * around.  (40 dc)  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 6:  Change to color 2.  Ch 1.  Sc around.  (40 sc)  Join to ch.
Round 7:  Change to color 1.  Ch 3.  Dc around.  (40 dc)  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 8:  Change to color 2.  Ch 1.  Sc around.  (40 sc)  Join to ch.
Rounds 9-12:  Repeat Rows 7 and 8.  Do not finish off.


Earflap 1: using Color 1
Row 1: Change to color 1, Ch 1. Sc in next 10 dc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 6 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (8 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 4 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (6 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 2 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (4 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 9: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over two sc.  Finish off.
Edging - Using Color 2, ch 1, sc around earflap.  When you get back to Round 12, sl st, finish off.

Earflap 2:  Attach Color 1 yarn 7 stitches over on the other side of the seam.  (smaller opening for the back of the hat)
Row 1: Ch 1. Sc in next 10 dc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 6 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (8 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 4 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (6 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over next two sc.  Sc in next 2 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.  (4 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.
Row 9: Ch 1, turn.  Sc dec over two sc.  Finish off.
Edging - Attach Color 2 yarn with a sl st to round 12.  Sc around earflap.  Attach to other side of Round 12 with sl st.  Finish off.  Weave in ends.


Braided strings:
Cut 12 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is about 4 in long (or desired length,) tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.  Repeat for second earflap.
